Twelve Tips If You're Involved in an Auto Accident
By Jerry Kessler, Esq.
1. Stop promptly. Pull out of traffic if possible.
2. Exchange information with the other driver. Look at his/her driver's license and vehicle registration. Present your own license and vehicle registration. Provide (to the other driver, the owner of his/her vehicle or other damaged property, any injured party and any law enforcement representative) your current residence address, the name and residence address of the registered owner of your vehicle and the name and policy number of your insurance carrier. Be sure to write down the following information:
A. the other driver's name, residence address and driver's license number. Try to obtain the other driver's phone number and the name, address and phone number of his/her employer.
B. the make, model, year and license number (including state of registry) of his/her car.
C. the name and residence address of the registered owner.
D. the name of the insurance company and the policy number.
3. Get the name phone number and address of any witnesses who saw the accident occur. If you see another car leaving the scene and think the driver of occupant may have seen the accident happen, write down the vehicle's license number, make, model and color.
4. Don't admit liability but don't be surprised if other driver doesn't either.
5. Keep your cool. Don't provoke any argument, even if the other driver is hostile, abusive or lies about what happened.
6. If you are injured, ask to have a law officer called to the scene.
7. If you feel at all hurt or unsteady, do accept medical treatment or transport to an emergency facility.
8. Report the accident to your insurance agent promptly. Fill out and submit the Report of Traffic Accident (SR-1) to the Department of Motor Vehicles within 10 days of the accident.
9. At the earliest opportunity, have a full check-up by a qualified physician.
10. If you are injured, you should know that the people who obtain medical treatment the earliest, most consistently and most aggressively, tend to recover the soonest and the most
